The GATE highlights: Ethics as a Foundation for Responsible Research

The edited volume A Guide to Responsible Research (Springer, 2023) was added to the GATE service recently.

It provides a comprehensive and timely contribution to strengthening ethical foundations in contemporary research practice. Addressing core questions of responsibility, integrity, and accountability, the publication strongly aligns with the Open Science guiding thought that ethics is a basis for good and responsible research.

In an increasingly complex research environment—shaped by digitalisation, data-intensive methods, and artificial intelligence—the book offers structured guidance to help researchers, educators, and institutions navigate ethical challenges across disciplines.

Ethics as a Core Guiding Thought of Open Science

The volume emphasizes that ethical reflection is not an optional add-on, but a foundational element of high-quality research. It explores how ethical principles underpin responsible decision-making throughout the research lifecycle—from study design and data collection to analysis, publication, and reuse.

This understanding closely resonates with the GATE’s approach to Open Science: openness, transparency, and innovation must be grounded in ethical awareness to ensure trustworthiness and societal relevance. By articulating ethics as a guiding thought for research practice, the publication contributes to a shared conceptual framework that supports responsible openness rather than openness at any cost.
