GATE at UNESCO: Advancing Open Science Monitoring and Capacity Building

The Open Science Learning GATE proudly participated in the “Open Science: Monitoring Progress, Assessing Impact” conference, held 7–8 July 2025 at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris and online. This major event, co-organised by UNESCO, PathOS, OpenAIRE, EOSC Track, and the Open Science Monitoring Initiative (OSMI), gathered experts, policymakers, and open science practitioners from around the globe to discuss the monitoring and assessment of open science impact.

Throughout the conference, participants explored the latest findings of the PathOS project and discussed the draft principles for open science monitoring developed by OSMI. The event also reinforced the global effort to implement the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science, emphasising the need for evidence-based approaches to measure the societal and scientific value of open science.

At the conference, the GATE initiative reiterated how it can support capacity building and continuous knowledge exchange within the research ecosystem. Through its GATE Service and annual GATE Report, the initiative helps trainers, institutions, and policymakers access high-quality, FAIR, and up-to-date open science training resources. By collecting and reflecting on guiding thoughts and practices across the research community, the GATE complements global efforts to monitor and strengthen open science capacities.

GATE’s participation underlined its mission to drive innovation and trustworthy research by fostering sustainable, collaborative solutions that enhance the visibility, usability, and impact of open science training. Events like OSMI demonstrate how GATE contributes to establishing Open Science as the new normal, connecting data, policy, and practice to shape a more transparent and impactful research ecosystem.
