Meeting the “Lernzielmatrix”: Strengthening open science didactics in research data management

An inspiring intersection of GATE’s mission with Open Science education emerges from the University sector in Germany (NFDI), where the “Lernzielmatrix zum Themenbereich Forschungsdatenmanagement” (Learning Objectives Matrix on Research Data Management) offers a structured and competency-based approach to Open Science training. Developed for content creators and trainers working on scientific integrity and data stewardship, the matrix highlights a powerful synergy with the GATE initiative’s goals of capacity building and community connection.

Targeting bachelor’s and master’s students, early-career researchers, and increasingly in-demand roles like data stewards, this German-language resource aligns closely with:

  • Scientific integrity
  • Transparency and reusability
  • Knowledge as a public good

By providing a granular map of competencies needed in Research Data Management (RDM), the “Lernzielmatrix” not only supports didactic planning but also helps educators tailor training to specific audiences - an approach that mirrors GATE’s emphasis on facilitating sustainable access to Open Science capacities.

The matrix is available on Zenodo (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.15025246) and serves as a model for how higher education institutions can play a pivotal role in operationalising Open Science through education. It contributes to GATE’s broader aim of connecting diverse communities in the Open Science ecosystem by equipping future researchers and professionals with the tools and mindset needed to navigate a data-intensive research environment ethically and openly.
